About Wuhan University
Wuhan University is a comprehensive and key national university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. It is a participant university of the “985” project and “211 Project” in China and also one of the first universities approved under the national “Double First Class” initiative.
In 2022, the University ranked 157 in the Thames Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking, 101-150 in the Soft Science World University Academic Ranking (ARWU), and 194 in the QS World University Ranking, an international education research institution.
Wuhan University is located in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province, which enjoys the reputation of “thoroughfare of nine provinces”, with convenient transportation. The university features spectacular natural surroundings with the scenic Luojia Hill in it and the beautiful East Lake by its side.
Its 346-hectare campus is wooded and green, and has fragrant flowers everywhere all the year round. The buildings are in special architectural styles, magnificent and mansion looking. Therefore, Wuhan University is acknowledged as one of the most beautiful universities in China.
Wuhan University has been receiving international students since the 1930s, and is one of the earliest institutions in China to admit international students. So far, Wuhan University has received and trained nearly 11,000 international students from more than 169 countries and regions in the world.
About Scholarship
The “China Studies Program” (CSP) Ph.D. Fellowships include the Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship and the Ph.D. in China Fellowship. The Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship sponsors outstanding doctoral students enrolled in foreign universities to come to China for study, joint research and doctoral dissertation writing.
Generally, it is for one semester to two academic years. The Ph.D. in China Fellowship sponsors outstanding foreign master graduates to study for doctoral degrees in Chinese universities. It is generally to be completed within three or four years.
Eligibility
The Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship program:
a. Non-Chinese citizens;
b. Officially registered doctoral students in regular foreign universities;
c. Language proficiency of HSK Level 3 or above, with preference given to those with excellent Chinese language proficiency under the same conditions.
The Ph.D. in China Fellowship program:
a. Non-Chinese citizens;
b. A graduate with master’s degree, or current master’s degree candidates;
c. Language proficiency of HSK Level 5 or above, with preference given to those with excellent Chinese language proficiency under the same conditions.
Application documents
The Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship program:
a. Proof of enrollment in a PhD program;
b. 2 letters of recommendation from experts in your field of study;
c. Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) transcript;
d. Abstract of master’s thesis or other research results;
e. Doctoral dissertation abstract;
f. Study plan during your stay in China;
g. A scanned copy of passport photo page;
h. Non-criminal record;
i. Foreigner Physical Examination Form;
j. Acceptance letter from WHU professors (if have).
The Ph.D. in China Fellowship program:
a. Notarized transcripts of undergraduate and master’s studies, degree certificates (fresh master students should provide school documents) and a Chinese translation for each;
b. 2 recommendation letters from experts in the field;
c. Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) transcripts;
d. Abstracts of master’s thesis and other research results;
e. Doctoral study plan;
f. A scanned copy of passport biographical page;
g. Non-criminal record;
h. Foreigner Physical Examination Form;
i. Acceptance letter from WHU professors (if have).
Note:
All the application documents should be in Chinese or English. Translation version should be notarized. The non-criminal record should be issued by local public security authority. The validity of the non-criminal record and the Foreigner Physical Examination Form is 6 months. Please check the Foreigner Physical Examination Form and Acceptance Letter Form in the attachment.

a. Submit application in the China Studies Program system http://csp.chinese.cn/myDoip. You can find the list of professors in the system.
b. Submit application in Wuhan University online application system http://admission.whu.edu.cn.
Scholarship coverage
The scholarship covers tuition, Medical and accidental insurance premiums, living expenses and research allowances, international traveling expenses, etc.
Application deadline
February 28th, 2023.
Assessment and admission
Wuhan University will review application documents and organize online interviews for applicants. The expert committee of the China Studies Program will make final evaluation and assessment to select scholarship candidates. Usually, the final result will be announced in June.
