Introduction to Shanghai Normal University
Founded in 1954, SHNU boasts 11 disciplines from 19 colleges, more than 20, 000 undergraduates, 8, 000 postgraduates and over 1,100 overseas students. Until this year, SHNU has 9 first-degree disciplines of doctoral candidates, 33 first-degree disciplines of master’s programs, 9 post-doctoral programs, 1 national key lab disciplines, 11 Shanghai municipal key disciplines, 11 Shanghai Peak and Plateau Programs, 4 Characteristic Disciplines Construction of Higher Education programs, 1 Comprehensive Reforms Trial of Undergraduate Majors of Shanghai, 3 Outstanding Teachers’ Training and Reforms programs of Education Ministry of China, 1 Neoindustrial Research and Practices program of China, 8 Undergraduates’ Trial Majors of Applied Science for Universities in Shanghai, and 18 Undergraduate Education Construction Programs of Shanghai.
Moreover, 5 SHNU disciplines have been listed as top 1 perent of ESI.
SHNU also owns a series of key national science and social science labs as well as research centers. In recent years, SHNU has successfully been approved of 520 state-level programs.
Particularyly, SHNu also boasts a collection of over 3 million books, more than 100 electronic databases and about 120, 000 ancient books. The SHNU Ceramics Arts Museum is one of the ten most influential mueums of traditional culture and arts in Shanghai. The SHNU established cooperative education partnership with 7 universities in the USA, the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Russia and France. It has two Confucius Institutes in Japan Fukuyama University and University of Botswana in Africa.
Eligibility
All applicants shall be:
a) non-Chinese citizens;
b) in good physical and mental condition, with good academic performance and conduct;
c) committed to Chinese language education and related work;
d) Between the ages of 16 and 35 as of September 1st, 2021. Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall not be over 45, while undergraduate student applicants shall not be over 25.
Types and Qualifications
Master Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(MTCSOL)
The program commences in September 2021 and provides scholarship for a maximum of two academic years.
Applicants shall hold a Bachelor’s degree, and have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 5) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).
Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution or relevant proof upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.
One-Academic-Year Program
The program commences in September 2021, and provides scholarship for a maximum of 11 months. International students currently studying in China are not eligible.

Application Procedures
Step 1.
Search for recommending institutions and host institutions
Online registration is available from March 1st, 2021 on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website (http://cis.chinese.cn ). Please log on to search for recommending institutions and host institutions.
Step 2.
Upload the following application documents on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website (http://cis.chinese.cn ):
A. For all applicants
a) a scanned copy of passport photo page. (Applicants under the age of 18 shall provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China.)
b) a scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-year validity).
c) a reference letter by the head of the recommending institutions()
d) Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall also provide the employment certificate and reference letter from the institute which they are employed.
B. For applicants of the Scholarship for MTCSOL, the following additional documents are needed
a) a certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and an official transcript.
b) 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors.
c) Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution or relevant proof upon completing their studies in China.
Step 3.
Apply on the International Student Application System of SHNU website (The MTCSOL Scholarship applicants ONLY)
The MTCSOL Scholarship applicants are also required to visit the International Student Application System of SHNU website http://apply.shnu.edu.cn, register and submit all the application documents to apply. (see the picture below for the list of application documents.)
Step 4.
Please track the application progress, comments and result. CLEC (Center For Language Education And Cooperation) will complete the scholarship review and publish the results about three months before enrollment of the scholarship winners.
Step 5.
After receiving confirmation of studying in SHNU, the university will offer the suitable registration documents according to the latest policy. Scholarship winners can print the scholarship certificate online. Students should register at university on the specified date in the admission letter.

Application Deadline
Master of Chinese international education, one academic year, one semester student
Deadline:May 15, 2021.

Coverage
International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.
Tuition fee
The tuition fee is waived but the textbook is at students’ own expenses.
Accommodation fee
A twin room is offered for the students. Students may also live off-campus upon application and getting permission from the university. Students who live off-campus are entitled to accommodation allowance of CNY700.00 per person/month paid on a monthly / quarterly basis.
Living allowance
The students will be entitled to living allowance on a monthly basis. The allowance for non-degree students is CNY2,500.00 per person per month. For MTCSOL student, the allowance is CNY3,000.00 per person per month.
( During the pandemic , the allowance will be paid according to the latest notice of scholarship committee.)
Comprehensive Medical Insurance
Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by the university in accordance with relevant regulations of studying in China stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. Insurance is CNY400 for one-semester students, and CNY800 per year for students engaged in program longer than one academic year.
NOTE
- 1. Students are required to complete enrollment procedures for every semester within stipulated period. Those who fail to register on time, fail to pass the health assessment, drop out midway and/or suspended from school will be deprived of their scholarship. Students who are enrolled before the15th (or on the 15th) of the month are entitled to the full allowance of that month while those enrolled after the 15th of that month are only entitled to half of the amount.
2. During the study period, for any student who is absent from China due to personal reasons for more than 15 days (excluding winter and summer holidays), the allowance during absence will be suspended.
3. For students who suspend study or drop out of school for personal reasons, or who are given disciplinary punishment,allowance will be terminated on the date of such suspension, dropping out or when the decision of such punishment is announced.
4. The living allowance for the month of graduation will be granted half a month after the date of graduation or expiration day of the study.
5. Partial Scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, and comprehensive medical insurance.
6. A Chinese proficiency test (HSK) and an oral test(HSKK) must be taken before the completion of the academic study. MTCSOL students are required to participate in HSK and HSKK once a year. The registration fee will be reimbursed by the school.
The Annual Review
Scholarship recipients with a study period of more than one year are required to take the annual review. The annual review includes comprehensive evaluations of academic performance, Chinese proficiency, attendance and participation in cultural activities and so on. Those who achieve excellence in the annual review can continue to have the full scholarship in the second year, and those who have achieved good will receive partial scholarships, and the rest will be suspended from scholarship.
